History and curious facts about Black Velvet Whisky
Black Velvet Whisky is a Canadian brand. It originates in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, a city in south western Quebec. Even tough the brand has a long history, its is called Black Velvet since the late 1940s.
The Master Distiller Jack Napier used the name first. In his opinion the taste of the whisky was smooth as black velvet. Since 1999 the distillery is part of the American company Constellation Brands, that is based in NYC. Curious fact: The brand, which is the second best-selling whisky producer in Canada gained its fame during World War II.
During the war Black Velvet was the only liquor that was given to Canadian submarine officers.
Different expressions, aromas and flavors
Till now (August 2017) the brand has been offering four different expressions.
The most famous one is called Black Velvet Whisky. The amber colored whisky smells sweet and soft like butterscotch. Also, the taste is very subtle and smooth.
It surprises you with warm vanilla, caramel and tropical coconut. Especially in relation to the price the whisky is an awesome choice.
Another expression is the Black Velvet Reserve, that ages for a minimum of eight years, Warm aromas such as chocolate, nuts, wood and some subtle spice notes are dominating the bouquet of the whisky.
The flavors itself are dry and pleasing. You can taste wood, malt and some roasted nuts.
Black Velvet Toasted Caramel comes with a brown label. The whisky is golden with warm amber reflexes.
The nose is very intense and reminds you of warm, buttery caramel. Its taste combines woody flavors with caramel and English toffee. The aftertaste lingers long in your mouth and pleases you with its smooth and creamy texture.
Black Velvet Cinnamon Rush is the ideal whisky for a cold winter day. Its aromas are spicy and smell like cinnamon sticks. Like the other expressions of the brand the whisky combines warm spicy flavors with pleasing woody notes.
The aftertaste is long lasting, spicy and warm.
How to prepare a sweet and creamy cocktail with Black Velvet whisky
Black Velvet Whisky offers versatile whiskys, that are suitable for cocktails and long drinks. They are well-suited for classic cocktails like Whisky Sour or Old Fashioned. But also Grog style cocktails and contemporary drinks go very well with the Canadian whisky.

Red Hot Cake Batter – ingredients
1 part Black Velvet Cinnamon Rush
1 part. Black Velvet Toasted Caramel
½ part Butterscotch schnapps
2 parts half & half or milk
Maraschino cherry or small chunk of cake
Combine ingredients over ice and strain them into a martini glass. If you like your cocktail well chilled, serve on the rocks. Garnish the Red Hot Cake Batter with a cherry and small chunk of cake.
Suggestion: If you are lactose intolerant or you live on a vegan diet, substitute the milk with almond milk. The nutty taste of the plant milk combines very well with the sweet and nutty flavors of the whisky.
