In this edition of No fail, whisky cocktail, we introduce you to an incredible type of whisky called Grain Whisky. A grain whisky is a whisky made with grains other than the normally used malted barley. A distillery may use maize/corn, wheat or rye. You will probably find some malted barley within its ingredients as it provides enzymes needed for mashing. In Ireland and Scotland, malted barley is required to be included during its production.
You may say that grain whisky is the opposite of malt whisky. Malt whisky is a whisky made only with malted barley.Normally the American or the Canadian whiskies are grain whiskies.
In order to proceed with our incredible whisky cocktails, we will introduce you to a very famous and fantastic grain whisky called, Teeling Single Grain Whiskey.
In 1920, in Dublin, Ireland, the two biggest distilleries called George Roe’s Thomas Street operation and William Jameson & Co.’s Marrowbone Lane had disappeared. For 40 years, no one was distilling whisky by the banks of the River Liffey.
After 40 years, Stephen and Jack Teeling, sons’ of John Teeling woke its spirit again. The family had been working with whisky since 1782, which meant that they were able to create some superb mature whiskeys.
In 2013, the company released the Teeling’s Single Grain Whiskey, which had been matured in Californian Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrels giving it a spicy and fruity flavour. It has some incredible sweet notes of cinnamon and toffee with a hint of mixed herbs and wine.
This distillery has been pushing boundaries of Irish whiskey since it was reborn, with their well-defined confines of age-old traditions.
